Vilniaus viešasis transportas (Vilnius Public Transport, VVT) and Czech manufacturer Škoda Group on 15th of May 2023 signed a contract to purchase 91 Škoda 32 Tr low-floor trolleybuses for about 52 million euros.

By spring 2025, the fleet of the Lithuanian capital will thus acquire modern vehicles that will contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment of the city. The order also includes a contract for the supply of spare parts needed for the regular maintenance of trolleybuses for the first 5 years of operation.

"I am proud that we have once again confirmed our position as the leading manufacturer of trolleybuses in Europe. When manufacturing vehicles, we place great emphasis on sustainability and innovation, and I am glad that we can offer our partners efficient and at the same time environmentally friendly solutions," said the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Škoda Electric, Petr Novotný.

Škoda trolleybuses are well known to Vilnius residents. Several hundred vehicles, mainly Škoda 9Tr and Škoda 14 Tr, have been running on the city streets since the 1960s. These trolleybuses have always been popular and considered very reliable. The last deliveries of these older types took place in the 1990s. Since 2018, 41 trolleybuses with Škoda traction equipment have been operating in Vilnius streets.

The twelve-meter "Škoda 32 Tr" trolleybuses are equipped with traction batteries for operation out of overhead wires up to 20 km. The battery can be charged directly from the traction line while driving (so-called In-Motion-Charging) or in the depot via the CCS2 connector.

"A trolleybus with a traction battery that enables dynamic charging from the traction line is a highly efficient technology that has huge economic and ecological potential. A significant advantage is that these vehicles do not require additional charging infrastructure. This type of trolleybuses are easier to control, they are more comfortable and, if necessary, can go around obstacles not only at intersections, but also in the surrounding streets," said VVT General Director Darius Aleknavičius.

In addition to trolleybuses, Škoda Group also delivered 13 double-decker trains to Lithuania in the past and is interested in other orders for electric train units.
