Ambassador Martin Tlapa presented credentials to the Governor General of Canada and honored the 34th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution

The presentation of credentials took place at the seat of the Governor General of Canada - Rideau Hall in Ottawa. The ceremony is an important tradition where new ambassadors present the original letter of credence from their respective Head of State to the Governor General of Canada upon their arrival in the country, formally assuming their ambassadorial role.

Ambassador Martin Tlapa handed over his credentials together with the designated ambassadors of Finland, Sweden, the Dominican Republic, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Senegal and Norway. Some of the honorary consuls of the Czech Republic in Canada and diplomats also joined the ceremony as guests.

In a follow-up meeting with Governor General Mary May Simon, Ambassador Martin Tlapa outlined his priorities for his mission in Canada, focusing on international political, economic, scientific and innovation cooperation. Furthermore, current issues were discussed, including joint support for Ukraine. The Governor General appreciated the active support of the Czech Republic for Ukraine, as Czechia hosts the largest number of displaced Ukrainians per capita in the world. Energy, security, critical minerals, as well as support for freedom, democracy and human rights in the world were also on the meeting’s agenda.

Immediately after the ceremony, Ambassador Tlapa, along with the honorary consuls, paid tribute to the Czech Day of Struggle for Freedom and Democracy, the International Students' Day and the 34th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution (November 17) by laying flowers at Václav Havel's tree. The first president of the independent Czech Republic planted a tree on the occasion of his official visit to Canada in 1999 in the gardens of the Governor General's residence. The tree (Virginia hornbeam) is growing stronger, just like Czech democracy!
